I am one of those people who has a hard time waiting for something. So the art of anticipation is not something I’m very good at.

I saw a video recently where they experimented with children. Children were offered two options. They could eat a marshmallow or wait and be rewarded with a second one later.

Now some of the kids couldn’t wait, so they ate the marshmallow. Of the 600 hundred kids, one-third deferred long enough to get the second marshmallow.

The children who delayed gratification had higher SAT scores, fewer behavioral issues, and stronger friendships. You can read more at: A Delicious Lesson in Delayed Gratification.

I’m not sure how well I would have done with this experiment, but I probably would have taken the first marshmallow. Today, I’m a bit better at anticipation although I can be impatient a lot of the time. What about you?

Have you ever had a bad day, week, or month yet had something wonderful to look forward to? If you’ve ever been in that scenario, you know how much having something exciting on the horizon can help.
